A MacBook Air with dock would be incredibly sweet!

The middle-of-the-road 15-inch standard just isn't for me. Thus, the free MacBook Air seemed to be the perfect answer to the lighter side of that spectrum.

Though the free MacBook Air is small and incredibly light, it's also surprisingly solid.

It's nearly 50 percent larger than the trackpad on the 17-inch free MacBook Pro, though the single button at the bottom is shorter.

But the capabilities of the trackpad are substantial.

Although I opted for the 80GB PATA drive and the 1. 8GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, application launching and overall speed of the free MacBook Air is perfectly reasonable.

Small and thin enough to fit inside a standard manilla envelope, the new MacBook Air redefines ultraportable notebooks with an innovative design and sleek styling.

This system is certainly not the most powerful or exapandable on the market, but it is one of a very few systems for the user for whom size and weight is at a premium.

You shouldn't expect prices for this notebook to drop much, or new powerful configurations to roll out.

With respect to the lack of an optical drive, while it will cause some problems this is very much the same thing as the demise of the floppy drive.

For some people the lack of the drive will be very important but I honestly don't think that will bother me since I don't tend to use mine very much at all, except for the installation of applications.

Subnotebooks make compromises-- the CPU is usually slower, there are fewer ports and the optical drive is often not internal (though that's slowly changing since Sony raised the bar and found a way to squeeze a DVD drive into slim but still much thicker subnotebooks).

The MacBook Air is definitely the slowest Mac in the current Apple lineup, but it's nonetheless a powerful machine that's faster than competing 3 pound and under notebooks.

From my last post I received numerous questions about how I will cope with the obvious limitations of the MacBook Air: no optical drive, no ethernet, slower processor, slower hard drive, a single USB port and 2GB of RAM.

I loved the touch and feel, the design was absolutely fantastic but the performance including external hook ups (USB) was poor.

There are sacrifices, to be sure, such as the single USB port and the lack of an internal optical drive, but they're minor when the Air's size and weight are taken into consideration.

I carry the macbook to and from school every day and between classes (six per day! ) and the 2. 5KG macbook does get heavy.

Chief among them is the lack of a removable battery.

That single USB port is a problem, because so many peripherals use USB.

The second reason the MacBook Air is bad for consumers is that it essentially acts as Apple's first aggressive effort to gradually force mainstream computer users to accept less powerful, less customizable, passive (read: dumb) terminal computers.

There are ways around this limitation (looks like CarbonCopyCloner will allow this, for instance), but the average user won't have prepared themselves before disaster strikes.

I have a 4GB Lexar Lightning USB which handles everything for me, and the lack of ports is something I honestly just got used to.
