After the door is open, you only have access to the cargo area from one side.

A sport package added a mesh grille, hood scoop, color-keyed door handles, a roof rack, silver sport pedals, heated mirrors, gray-painted bumpers and fender flares, and sport fabric seats.

Advantages included carlike handling, a low cargo floor and a large rear door that made loading cargo a breeze.

The cross-section of the dashboard and the door trim panels has been emphasised to create a more open and spacious feel.

A sport package added a mesh grille, hood scoop, color-keyed door handles, a roof rack, silver sport pedals, heated mirrors, gray-painted bumpers and overfenders and sport fabric seats.

If the vehicle is parked on a street, this detail becomes problematic for most other international markets as the door blocks the path to the curb when open.

Meaning that the dash and door panels possess organic shapes that are visually interesting yet seem somehow alien.

Interior design and comfort

If you don't need the full 1469 litres of space (full flat floor), the RAV4's rear seats are split (60/40) and can be reclined individuality or slid backwards or forwards over 165 mm to suit, offering you superb flexibility.

The width is also increased (by 80mm) and increased shoulder space allows the front seats to be set further apart, again improving comfort.

A manual cut-off switch is provided for the front passenger airbag to cancel airbag deployment when a child seat is being used.

Of course, cargo room is greatly diminished when the third-row seats are in use.

I appreciated that the driver seat is larger than before.

Kidmarks: The back seat is a wonderland of flexibility, with seats that slide forward and back and recline to accommodate passengers of all sizes.

As the driver's seat is a bit of a tight fit, tall drivers may find it difficult during long drives.

Pros: Back seat is almost usable now, well-configured cargo space Cons: TOO big, TOO refined, TOO equipped, TOO pricey The Bottom Line: I'm not crazy about the RAV4.

The back seat is adequate for two people --- no more.

The third row seat is a total joke.

I thought the seat controls were easy to use, though I feel like the front seat is still a bit tight if you're tall.

The extended-length RAV4 is larger by 21% in interior volume from the last generation and now has an available third-row seat for two small children (US and Canada only).

Among the RAV4's options is a (kids-only) third-row seat that folds into the floor, as well as side curtain airbags, a powerful JBL audio system and, on Limited models only, leather upholstery and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

For extra convenience, you'll also find a cut-off switch on the passenger side, disabling the front passenger airbag should you want to put a child seat at the front.

Whats New: Completely remade for 2006, the bigger and better-than-ever RAV4 gets a rollover sensor and side-curtain airbags, while a new JBL premium sound system with Bluetooth and steering-wheel controls joins the option list.

Longer, wider, roomier, and available with an optional third-row seat good for seating pre-teen children, the 2006 Toyota RAV4 gets a styling upgrade designed to make it more appealing to men.

Sport versions can be equipped with the cargo cover/utility net and the tow package plus a power sunroof, JBL premium audio with nine-speakers and a subwoofer, and steering wheel audio controls.

Trunk and load capacity

With the seats in place the boot is 586 litres but folding the seats over increases this to a huge 1469 litres.

There's more interior and boot space, and Toyota has applied its Easy Flat seating system for the rear seats to fold flat into the floor.

The back seats can slide fore and aft to increase boot space, although this does reduce legroom.

It's practical and apart from a small boot has abundant room for 4 or 5 at a pinch.

Safety

Front seat-mounted side airbags and first and second row side curtain airbags are not standard, but are available

Side impact airbags were optional.

I just wish that curtain airbags were standard safety equipment on all RAV4s.

Side airbags for front occupants and full-length side curtain airbags are optional.

The driver and front passenger advanced airbags are on the job while standard side airbags and roll-sensing side curtain airbags do their part in the event of a mishap.

For 2007, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags became standard (they were optional in '06), and the optional JBL audio system received steering-wheel-mounted controls and Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety first: there are no less than nine airbags (including a driver's knee airbag) in the RAV4, a compact SUV designed to protect you should the worst happen.

Available with nine SRS airbags

The new Toyota RAV4 is available with a comprehensive SRS airbag system with no fewer than nine airbags.

Part-time four-wheel drive is standard on all models, and every RAV4 comes with no less than nine airbags.

Does the 2008 Toyota RAV4 have side-impact airbags or side curtain airbags?

The 2008 Toyota RAV4 has both side-impact and side curtain airbags, and both come as standard equipment.

This model comes with dual-zone air conditioning and a chrome grille, but still leaves buyers to pay well over $2,000 for optional leather-trimmed seats, curtain airbags and the additional third row.

To ensure maximum driver and passenger protection, there are no less than 9 airbags inside RAV4's cabin.

Standard equipment includes dual airbags, adjustable three-point seatbelts and enhanced side-impact protection.

Engine

The optional, engine is straight from the Avalon, basically in the same tune, and due to recalculation of SAE power figures it's now rated at 269 horsepower and 246 lb-ft of torque.

The standard engine on all RAV4s is the latest version of Toyota's ubiquitous 2. 4-liter four-cylinder - available in a similar state of tune on a vast array of vehicles ranging from the Scion tC sport coupe to the bread-and-butter Camry sedan to the Highlander crossover ute.

The base engine is a 2. 4 liter four of 166 hp, more than adequate for this vehicle.

A 2. 0L I4 engine producing 148 hp was the only engine available.

G forces: The base engine is an economical, 166-horsepower four-cylinder.

The standard engine is a more fuel-conscious 2. 4-liter four-cylinder rated at 166 horsepower.

The standard engine is more fuel-conscious.

The standard engine is not bad, however.

Early models had a 148-hp, 2. 0-liter, four-cylinder engine that came up short versus the larger four- and six-cylinder engines offered by competitors.

A higher compression ratio provides a 5-hp bump-the engine now makes 166 hp-but since the vehicle is heavier, performance is unchanged.

That explains why the redesigned 2006 Toyota RAV4 is bigger, more aggressive looking, and equipped with an optional V6 engine that makes almost as much horsepower as the V8 engine in a heavier Ford Explorer.

Under the hood, a choice between a spunky four-cylinder or impressive V6 engine is available, either connected to a shift-logic automatic transmission – the manual gearbox dies with this redesign.

Headlining this engine line-up is the remarkable D-4D 180 engine which is the most powerful diesel in the compact SUV sector.

The new Toyota RAV4 is the latest model in the Toyota line-up to be offered with the remarkable 2. 2-litre D-4D engines.

These engines have previously been seen in the Toyota Avensis and, since late 2005, in the Corolla Verso.

The new 2. 2-litre D-4D engines available on RAV4 (D-4D 180 and D-4D 135) have the same common objectives: performance, fuel economy, reduced emissions and quietness.

For the new 2. 2-litre D-4D engines, Toyota has adapted the aluminium block of the AZ petrol engine which also underpins the 2. 0 VVT-i petrol engine found in the range.

Both engines feature variable nozzle turbo-chargers for maximum boost with good engine response and advanced intercoolers which have been subject to further continuous improvement.

Wheels and suspension

The rear suspension is unique to RAV4 and utilises a newly-developed independent double wishbone and trailing arm.

Larger tires were also available on all wheel drive models.

Sixteen-inch tires are standard on the base model.

The spare tire on the rear door is a feature that enables Toyota to offer a capacious third-row seat in the new Rav4.

Getting rid of the spare wheel from the rear door was a sensible thing to do.

Riding on a wheelbase 8 cm longer than its predecessor, the new Toy gained a stouter platform (torsional rigidity improved by 20 per cent), allowing the suspension to be retuned for a more compliant ride.

Suspension is independent byMacPherson struts at the front, and bytrailing arms with transverse links at the rear.

It's quietinside, though the low rolling-resistance tires are a bit noisy.

Front engine front wheel drive

Both Front wheel drive and Four-wheel drive were available, and the RAV4 could be had with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

For a pleasingly compact SUV, the RAV4 4X4 offers an enormous amount of space: even the rear suspension has been designed to lie diagonally under the floor giving an extra 230 mm wider luggage area.

Chassis

The RAV4 uses front-drive Camry sedan components and a unibody chassis, which give it a car-like demeanor.

Ford Escape, fresh on the market, designed as a truck for extra durability and available with a potent V-6, a chassis that gives it remarkable agility in corners and emergency maneuvers, a more-useful four-wheel drive setup, and a U. S. -appropriate lifting tailgate.

Fuel tank

The RAV4's tank is approximately the same size as the average mini suv's, though the average mini suv's is a tad more capacious.

No matter which engine and the mileage, though, the RAV4 has one fuel tank, capable of carrying 15. 9 gallons.
